Removing Mold and Mildew in the Bathroom Naturally

photo by Dr. Cornelius
With safe, non-toxic ingredients, such as baking soda and vinegar, you can kill mold in the bathroom, prevent more mold and mildew from growing and keep your bathroom clean and disinfected, naturally. Mold and mildew thrive in a moist environment, which is why shower walls and bathtub corners are prime areas for the growth of these fungi. Mold is not only unsightly, but it can have an adverse affect on health as well, particularly for sensitive people. Instead of using harsh chemicals which are often more harmful then the mold itself, you can opt for natural cleaning solutions for bathroom mold.

To make a solution for removing mold and mildew in the bathroom use:

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 gallon of warm water

Use this solution to clean all bathroom surfaces — shower walls, sinks, bathtubs, floors and outside of the toilet. It may smell like vinegar while you are cleaning, but you will not be inhaling any toxic fumes. Also, don't worry, the vinegar smell will go away. Try this anti-mold cleaning solution once or twice a month, depending on how much use your bathroom gets.

For more regular care you can simply spray a solution that will help kill bathroom mold. Using a small plastic spray bottle, mix:

  • 8 ounces of warm water
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 2 to 3 drops of an anti-fungal essential oil such as lavender or myrrh

Shake well and mist over mold-prone surfaces.

While routine cleaning is a cornerstone of getting rid of bathroom mold, fresh, dry air is also essential. Keep the bathroom well-ventilated with a fan and/or open windows and always remove any standing water.

  1. Mildew on the other hand is a type of fungus that grows on moist surfaces including bathtubs, shower & shower curtains, basement attics, drapes, floors, tiles, wood frames, concrete & insulation. A fungus is any microscopic organism that survives in a moist environment. Mildew is an important part of the environment; without it, leaves would not decay and soil enrichment would not be possible. Source: http://www.blackmoldremovalsupport.com/ Mildew has an awful smell and also poses health risks especially to those with asthma, allergies to mold, etc. Mildew usually has a gray or whitish color & can look powdery or very fuzzy.

    During humid weather, use an air conditioner or humidifier to keep the moisture at below 60 degrees. If you have leaks in your roof or sealing, repair them immediately as this will prevent mold spores from entering in to your home. Mildew can develop in a home within 24 - 48 hours after water damage. The water damage can be for several reasons including:

    * Flooding
    * Damp or wet basement
    * Wet crawl space
    * Overflow of water from sink or bathtub
    * High humidity due to steam cooker pressure, humidifiers or dryer vents

  2. In order to remove bathroom mold, you will need a solution that can remove the source of the black mold. When cleaning mold and mildew, you have to observe the perimeter wall and also look for any sources of moisture.

  4. Mold is usually seen in moist areas, especially on hidden spots inside the bathroom. They produce substances that may acts as allergens. This is actually dangerous to other people for it can produce severe reactions such as fever or difficulty in breathing. Please be aware about the symptoms of mold exposure such as sneezing, skin itchiness, headache and watery eyes. When cleaning mold, it's ALWAYS IMPORTANT to wear protective gloves and mask.

  7. Molds are multi-cellular (consist of more than one cell) filamentous fungi usually having a fuzzy or cottony soft appearance when they grow in areas in your homes. They may be white, dark or in any color. They produce spores usually asexually and in large numbers which means they arise and inherit from a single parent. Asexual reproduction is the primary form of reproduction for single-celled organisms such as bacteria and fungi. They are light, resistant to drying and can easily spread through the air and contaminate any areas.
    More often, a moldy smell might be the only clue that there is a hidden mold growth away from your house. Never ignore mold odors if you can't see any mold or else this might be the main reason of illnesses within your family. You should thoroughly inspect your home before any mold problems get worse.
